Chas Robinson has done Mandurah’s Ed's Shed proud; coming out with a unanimous decision in last weekend's fight despite suffering from the flu.
Saturday’s bout saw the young boxer go up against Matthew Italiano from Evolution MMA in the 57-kilogram junior division.
With illness forcing the talent youngster to miss training the Monday and Tuesday in the lead up to the fight, coach Eddie Kusnicki said Robinson was able to overcome the setback in the ring.
“He overpowered his opponent early, scored an eight-count on him in the second round and just dominated in all aspects of boxing – speed, power, movement – and performed brilliantly,” Kusnicki said.
Saturday’s fight will hopefully not be the last for Robinson with the Mandurah boxer conceding the fight was not one of his best performances.
He said he was tired and unfit for the fight against Italiano due to the flu, which made his punches slower than usual.
“I felt like I lost after the fight,” he said.
“I realised I did better than I thought I did after I watched the video.
“I guess I was just hard on myself.
“I didn’t think I went in very hard with my punches but seeing the video I guess I did."
Team mate Jackson England joined Robinson at Saturday’s tournament in his first fight back after an eight-month hiatus.
Taking on Lacey’s Gym’s power puncher, Josh Stockwell in the 60kg junior division, the time off effected the Golden Glove winner’s performance in the ring and he missed out on the unanimous decision.
“At first I thought it would be a lot easier but it was like I was in the ring for the first time again,” England said.
“I got in there and my brain was telling my body to do one thing and I did something completely different.
“The frustration towards myself after the fight was very high because I was upset and thought I did terribly.
“But I watched the video before and I actually did a lot better than I thought, but I was still not into as much as I should have been.”
Although the result was disappointing, Kusnicki said England had put up a brave performance for his first bout back.
“Jackson used his speed and agility in the first rounds but unfortunately his opponent was stronger and managed to catch him up and get some powerful shots in which took its toll later on in the bout,” he said.
“The other fighter from Lacey’s Boxing Gym does a lot of sparing with a lot of seniors and professional boxers and that showed in his style.
“It’s still Jackson’s first bout back but it’s still a stepping stone for the Golden Gloves and the state titles at the end of the year.”
In a quick turn around, both boxers will fight again this Sunday in order to get as much ring time before the Golden Gloves at the end of the year.
The duo will take on opponents in the 60kg junior division, with Robinson taking on Hassan’s Boxing Gym’s Michael Tucci and England rematching Stockwell at the Scarborough Sportsmen’s Club.
