A Mandurah man who callously beat his wife with bolt cutters while she sat on the toilet has been jailed for six years.
Troy Jay Power, 50, was sentenced on Friday for the brutal attack at the couple's Dudley Park home in July 2012.
The court heard Mr Power and his wife had become increasingly estranged after the death of their son in the two years leading up to the attack.
Mr Power, in a rage, broke down the toilet door as his wife of 30 years tried to escape him and beat her to the head and face with the weapon until the bolt cutters broke.
The court heard Mr Power yelled "I'm going to kill you. I'm going to kill myself. I'm not going to jail for anyone" before his wife tried to run from him.
The brutal assault then continued in the couple's lounge room where Mr Power continued to kick and assault his wife as she lay bleeding on the floor.
It was then, the court heard, that Mr Power asked his wife if she wanted to die or if she wanted him to call an ambulance.
When she replied she wanted an ambulance, Mr Power left her on the floor and went for a cigarette and a beer before calling paramedics to the couple's Dudley Park home.
The court heard the victim told paramedics she was assaulted by an alleged intruder.
She suffered a number of facial fractures, lacerations and severe bruising in the prolonged brutal assault.
The victim had a metal plate inserted into the left side of her face and according to medical reports, is still undergoing ongoing dental treatment.
Describing the callous attack as cowardly and disgraceful, Supreme Court Commissioner Kevin Sleight told Mr Power was fortunate his wife did not die during the frenzied attack.
"You have shown little remorse or empathy for your wife, and have sought to shift the blame onto her, to try to minimise your behaviour," he said.
Mr Power will have to serve four years of his six-year prison sentence but was made eligible for parole with his sentence was backdated to his July 2012 arrest.
