AFTER what I felt was a dull beginning for a superhero in Captain America: The First Avenger the Marvel superhero, has come into his own.
Now with the potential to be the favourite Avenger, the superhero now has an action-packed filmed to go along with his back story, making him possibly one of the most intriguing characters in the series.
Played by the broad shouldered Chris Evans, Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier brings to light the self-doubt and old-school values which is bypassed by the other characters.
While the first movie shows the origins of Captain America, born in the midst of World War II, the second depicts how someone from that era copes with challenges in the 21st century.
With the SHIELD agency infiltrated, early on the audience hear the infamous words: “Don’t trust anyone” – one of the few clichés in the Captain America film.
The superhero needs to decide if he can trust director Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) or the World Security Council member Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford), while fighting the Winter Soldier – someone from Captain America’s past who he didn’t plan on seeing again.
Scarlett Johansson is back from The Avengers playing her character Natasha Romanoff, an assassin for SHEILD.
Both Johansson and Evans have great chemistry on screen, however not in the romantic way.
It’s obvious the two characters have spent a lot of time together as friends between The Avengers and Captain America: The Winter Soldier with Natasha insistent on getting Captain America back into the dating game.
Their fighting scenes together are filled with pauses where the Russian assassin asks about different women in the superhero’s life, suggesting them as a possible date.
The banter not only gives some humour to the action and cementing their friendship in the viewer’s opinion, but also makes the pair appear like nothing is too hard when it comes to saving the world.
All in all, the Captain America franchise has only gone up since the beginning and has not let the big bang which was The Avengers be the pinnacle of the superhero’s film appearances.
