THE Mandurah Magic Women’s team’s winless season continued last weekend when they blew an eight-point lead to lose to the Rockingham Flames by three points, 63 to 66.
The Magic were only outscored by the Flames in the final period but it was enough to lose the game.
They had fought hard to lead by seven points heading into the last but a final quarter fade out saw the team slip to its fifth straight loss.
The girls were outscored 23 to 12 in the last.
Nine of the Flames’ 23 points came from the free throw line which would not have pleased the coaching staff.
Despite the winless start to the season the Magic still remain off the bottom of the ladder, only percentage ahead of the Cockburn Cougars.
For the Mandurah Magic’s men’s team it was a different story as they continued their promising start to the season with a 36-point demolition of the Rockingham Flames, 111 to 75.
The win has lifted Magic to fourth with four wins and two losses.
Magic’s head coach Jason Chalk said the team was quite exceptional.
“It was a good four quarter effort,” he said.
“We didn’t have a real stand out.”
The Magic started the game strongly to lead the Flames by seven at the end of the first.
In the second the Magic took their game to a new level adding 29 points to their tally compared to the Flames 14.
The Magic didn’t slow down in the third adding a massive 36 points while Rockingham managed 21.
The Mandurah boys may have taken their foot off the pedal in the last period but to Rockingham’s credit they were able to outscore the Magic by one point.
Taylor Mullenax top scored for the Magic with 25 points with Thomas Remmerswaal chipping in with 21.
Taylor Land was again influential with 13 assists and 11 points; he now leads the competition for average assists (9.7).
The team will play the Kalamunda Easter Suns and the Wanneroo Wolves this weekend.
Chalk said the Wolves, last year’s grand finalist, would be a really good challenge for the team.
“It will be a good gauge to see where we’re at,” he said.
