The best meat pies in Australia are at Pinjarra Bakery pulling out the power moves to seize the golden prize of 'Best Meat Pie in Australia' for their 'Chunky Steak pie' at the 2021 Great Aussie Meat Pie Competition.
The fun-loving bakery is well known on the awards circuit for its pursuit of pie excellence, having taken out the top prize for the first time back in 2019: A career pinnacle, over 20 years in the making.
The bakery, which has four locations across WA, won the best pie under a relatively basic criteria. According to the judging criteria, the best pies are expected to have a pastry top with "good lamination that is isn't too thick or too thin". The filling must have no gristle (cartilage) or bone, and the whole thing needs a perfectly balanced meat to pastry ratio.
Winning the top honor for the second time in three years proves how seriously the WA bakery takes their pies.
Chief pie masters Darren Rowe and Paul Pantaleo (also responsible for the 2019 winning pie) say they are forever in pursuit of "pie-fection".
The dynamic duo has worked together for 10 years, experiencing major success in merging perfectly primed pastry with explosive flavor combinations.
The pie innovators nabbed a total of 11 gold, five silver, and four bronze for majestic creations such as BBQ Beef brisket with campfire beans, Bombay Curry chicken with spiced potato, and the spectacular Lasagna seafood pie created by teammate Larry Gill.
Pinjarra Bakery's apprentice pastry chefs' also showcased their emerging talent.
Rose Lockyer received a gold commendation for her Chicken Leek and white wine, and Samantha Warner took home bronze for her Chicken Leek and Truffle Pie.
We asked the team at Pinjarra Bakery whether they favour 'classic bangers' like the chunky steak; or masterstroke invention pies.
Director Jodie Pantaleo explained that although the team revels in coming up with wacky creations to keep fans on their toes- simple will always reign supreme.
"With its glowing golden crust, mouth-watering aroma, and rich beef filling, there's nothing in the world quite like it. That's the power of pie."
