A popular event on the WA arts calendar will return to the regions and Perth metro area this summer, for the first time in almost a decade.
The Fremantle Theatre Company (FTC) and Bankwest have partnered to bring Shakespeare in the Park to audiences after a seven year absence.
The FTC production of A Midsummer Night's Dream is scheduled to begin at Leeuwin Estate in Margaret River on December 29-30, before moving to Bunbury, Albany, Fremantle, and ending at the Kings Park Botanical Gardens.
FTC Artistic Director Renato Fabretti said the return of Shakespeare in the Park was a celebration for Western Australia.
"A Midsummer Night's Dream is a Shakespeare classic and we're thrilled to deliver it to families and theatre lovers as a Christmas present for the community, and as vital work and engagement for local artists," Fabretti said.
"WA has always been a unique part of the world, but the past 18 months have made us even more so, and what better way to celebrate our freedom, sublime summers and rich culture than Bankwest Shakespeare in the Park.
"We're bringing together a mix of incredible new local talent, New York-trained performers, and WAAPA/NIDA graduates, each excited to hit the grass and wake up audiences from a long slumber.
"The creative team is working hard to forge a touring caravan, the design of which is rooted in recognisable Australian iconography, expanding, and innovating with the simple but divine purpose of indulging the senses."
FTC General Manager and Producer Pippa Davis said the company would work with Arts Margaret River to present the Leeuwin Estate performances.
"It is an exciting opportunity for us and we are very grateful to be able to access the lovely grounds of Leeuwin to put on this iconic play," she said.
"Arts Margaret River is working with us to ensure that the event is well staffed and we are grateful for their support.
We are hopeful that the local community and visitors will enjoy a new addition to their summer festivities.
A Midsummer Night's Dream will run at Leeuwin Estate December 29-30, Bunbury Senior High School January 4-5, Discovery Park Albany January 8-9, Walyalup Koort, Fremantle January 12-15 and Kings Park Botanical Gardens January 19-29.
