While the sports event industry continues to struggle globally due to COVID, WA's eased restrictions have seen a new event confirmed for Dwellingup in September.
The 2021 AusCycling Marathon Mountain Bike National Championships will act as part of the Dwellingup 100, a mountain bike race held annually since its 2009 inception.
Dwellingup as a region has cemented itself as one of Australia's popular mountain biking destinations, after the formation of purpose-built trails in Murray Valley, Turner Hill and Marrinup.
AusCycling racing and events manager Kip Kaufmann said he believed the event would also act as a catalyst through which new people discovered the sport.
"Dwellingup was an ideal host for the championships," Kaufmann said. "As a showpiece event, the additional profile and publicity that comes with hosting an AusCycling National Championship is sure to attract new people to the sport."
The 2020 event, which was held under strict COVID restrictions, prevented competitors traveling from outside of WA - but this year's event is set to draw in riders from across Australia to participate in the event.
There will be four different distances for participants to choose from, ranging from 15km to the 100km championship event, accommodating for a broad range of ages and abilities.
Over the past 12 years, the event has also provided a number of community benefits, including the formation of a mountain bike program at Dwellingup Primary School, with 70 per cent of the student body participating.
Dwellingup 100 has now raised over one million dollars for charities and community groups since it started.
