Writing books as a distraction from a mentally rough patch, Ravenswood resident Caris Bennell had no idea it would help empower not only children but also herself.
Her recently published books, Mummy I Think I Swallowed Butterflies, Daddy I Think I Have a Gift, and I Am help regulate children's emotions with "quick fixes" and make them believe in themselves.
"I wrote the books as a distraction from a difficult situation and I was able to grow from it rather than just go through it," Ms Bennell said.
"I really enjoyed putting my energy into something that I knew was going to help others."

Ms Bennell said the messages in her books were more important than ever.
"I want these books to give children peace and make them believe they can do anything and they are enough," she said.
"We are all unique and special in our own way."
She said the books give children a chance to have a positive mental attitude.
"One of the books is about children facing their emotions and fears and they're just quick fixes to take the worry out of the day and bring back the joy of being kids," she said.
"I Am has affirmations, which gives children a sense of self empowerment and a positive mental attitude.
"Daddy I Think I Have a Gift is all about remembering when you were young and just had that feeling of wanting to do something exciting for the day.
"I want children to keep doing that and never lose that feeling. I want them to follow their dreams and hold on to their imagination."

Ms Bennell said since the launch in January the support from the community had been overwhelming.
"I've had a lot of support from the community. The books have been selling really well," Ms Bennell said.
"I'm a hairdresser as well so my clients have been buying the books and supporting me, then a few of the local schools have bought them and MP Robyn Clarke bought some.
"My 17-year-old niece even did the illustrations because it's important to believe in others and the drawings are amazing.
"It's been quite a whirlwind."
