Two years ago when Mandurah's Clare White won the annual Nikki Wise scholarship, she had no idea she had taken the first step towards her dream of becoming a qualified counsellor.
The Mandurah mother put her her scholarship money towards tuition fees for a Diploma of Community Services and is now completing a Diploma of Counselling.
The City of Mandurah's Nikki Wise scholarship is a $2000 grant towards studies in community services for one city resident each year. The bursary was created in memory of Nikki Wise, the founder of the Reach Out Drop in Centre in Mandurah.
Ms Wise died in a motorcycle accident in 2016, with the City of Mandurah later creating the scholarship in her memory.
Ms White's goal is to eventually volunteer for Peel Connect's free counselling services, once her studies are complete.
"I'm very thankful for the scholarship, it's been paramount in helping with my HECS debt which means I can do further studies towards helping people," she said.
"I've lived in Mandurah for seven years, and this community has given so much to me. I feel comfortable and accepted here, this is my safe haven, so it's easy for me to want to give back to the community."
Applications for the 2021 Nikki Wise Scholarship have opened and close on Friday, May 7.
"To anyone thinking of applying for the scholarship, I say give it a try. Don't sell yourself short because you never know, just give it a go," Ms White said.
Mayor Rhys Williams said it was very special that Ms Wise's legacy continues to live on through this scholarship.
"So far we've seen outstanding community members benefit from the program, and it's inspiring to see people like Clare making the most out of this opportunity," he said.
"We look forward to seeing the high calibre of recipients continue."
