Child Abuse Squad detectives have charged two women as a result of their investigation stemming from a report of an alleged planned circumcision of a female baby as part of their cultural beliefs.
A spokesperson said WA Police embraced the diversity provided by the many cultural and ethnic groups that form our community but that "practises that may be acceptable by some cultures and in some countries may constitute criminal offences in Western Australia".
It is an offence to commit female genital mutilation in WA.
It is alleged in January 2021, the two women approached a doctor to conduct a female circumcision on the two-week-old female baby. The doctor refused and the procedure did not occur.
The women, aged 23 and 50, both from a suburb within the Cannington Police District, have each been charged with Conspiracy to Commit Indictable Offence.
They are due to appear before the Armadale Magistrates Court on Friday, March 12.
