The North Mandurah Football Club has been hard at work establishing its first women's AFL team - and it is now searching for new team members.
Since starting the men's team in 2019, the North Mandurah Football club has been a place where locals have flocked to become part of a footballing community.
Club president Jody Elphinstone said introducing a women's team would further build, diversify and enrich the community. "We want the team to be a place where women can make friends, keep up their fitness and have a go at something new," she said.
Ms Elphinstone said that many members who had signed up so far had been looking hard for a sports club to become a part of.
"Some have new babies and want to keep up a social and fit hobby, and some are looking to make friends and try out a sport they never have before. Football is for everyone," Ms Elphinstone said.
The team practise on Tuesday nights, and will play weekly games that will be housed at the newly developed Lakelands park.
Ms Elphinstone said female representation in football was important. "Now, with WAFL and AFL putting funding and time into developing women's teams, they are diversifying football. Football needed some diversity," she said. "There are men and women's teams for so many different sports - football shouldn't be any different."
When asked what advice she would give to someone who has never played football before but was considering joining the team, Ms Elphinstone said, "Come along and give it a try. There's no pressure. You can have a kick and have a go."
"Families can come down together and enjoy game days.
