Peel swimmers may see the amalgamation of two prominent swimming clubs, as a proposition for feasibility studies and a business case is on the horizon.
Both Peel Aquatic Club and the Mandurah Swimming club have been running independently of each other since the 1970s, when the local Mandurah club split into two.
Now the City of Mandurah is spending $7,000 to hire a consultant to help it decide whether whether to force the amalgamation of the clubs again.
"The City is working with both swimming clubs to help explore options for their future operations and growth of the sport in Mandurah," a City spokeswoman said.
The possibility of the two clubs merging has not come about unexpectedly. Members of both clubs say there hasn't really been a time since the initial split in the 1970s that there hasn't been talk of the two clubs remerging.
Peel Aquatic Club president Darren Michael said he had been open with his club members about the possibility of a merged club.
"I don't think it will happen quickly, and it will have to be run by a lot of people first - but I think one club has the potential to be a good thing," he said. "The two clubs already have a good relationship, and we'll make it work either way."
Mandurah Swimming Club president Grahame Shackles echoed many of Mr Michael's sentiments.
"The possibility of the merge has been raised every few years - but hasn't eventuated yet," Mr Shackles said.
"There are pros and cons like with anything. It's something that can be discussed further if/when the study moves forward."
Both clubs have a steady influx of members, with many competing at a national and even international level.
"I guess the main downside would be taking away choice," Mr Shackles continued. "If you don't feel like one club is the right fit, in the current state, you can move to the other. That would be the main issue."
Of the pros and cons Mr Michael said, "At the end of the day it's about the kids - all of our members. We want people to enjoy the sport and get the most out of it, whatever that looks like."
Both clubs will be participating in the 2021 Country Pennants swimming event in Mount Barker from February 27-28.
"For now we are getting ready for one of the biggest swim meets of the year," Mr Michael said.
Further decisions on the possible amalgamation of the clubs will be made when the issue is brought to a Mandurah council meeting.
