Mandurah Movie Club members have been left devastated following the Mandurah Performing Art Centre's (MPAC) decision to not renew the program.
The close to 500-strong club used to enjoy an array of international movies, which they would previously have to travel to Leederville or Fremantle to see.
Mandurah Movie Club manager Angela Simms said she had received over 50 emails from members deeply saddened by the news.
"I feel disappointed because I started bringing in these international movies, which were previously slipping past Mandurah.
"The community is so important - they're people on their own that can go into a theatre and sit next to someone and talk to the person next to them about the movie.
"I'm fighting for the members, I'm not fighting for me - this is why it can't fail."
In a letter to the Mandurah Mail, Mandurah Movie Club member Margaret Watson said she had hoped the program would continue this year.
"For six years we have enjoyed a wonderful selection of international movies not shown at our local cinema and as a resident of Mandurah I had hoped for this pleasurable pastime to continue in 2021," she said.
"We have been members for some time enjoying films that we would have previously had to travel to Perth to see, there was a membership of about 500 so as you see a thriving group," another member Jean Laws added.
Ms Simms said she couldn't "find an explanation as to why" the club hadn't been renewed.
"I haven't looked into screening the movies anywhere else yet as I still think MPAC is the best place to have it," she said.
"I'm willing to negotiate again as the members still want movies."
However, MPAC chief executive Marc Missiaen said the decision to not renew the Mandurah Movie Club was based on a number of reasons.
"It's a club for the community so we didn't want this to happen but sometimes it happens, which is unfortunate," he said.
"We couldn't offer 16 screenings a year anymore because it was just overburdening our whole centre so that's why we put out a proposal to cut it down a bit but that didn't go ahead.
"It has also been running at a loss for the past two years but that wasn't the main reason for us to not renew the club.
"We will be reimbursing all the members, it's fairly complex but we're working through the process."
Mr Missiaen also said MPAC would still be offering movies in the future.
"We will still be offering movies here in the future with a very diverse program," he said.
"We want the people to continue to enjoy movies - we are looking at collaborating with Luna theatres."
