A Denmark choreographer is looking for Mandurah men to take on a unique opportunity.
Taster workshops for touring dance project The Beauty Index is coming to town on February 6 and 7 at Mandurah Performing Arts Centre.
Put together by award-winning choreographer and dance artist Annette Carmichael, The Beauty Index is rolling out in Mandurah, alongside companion projects in Ravensthorpe, Moora, Kalgoorlie and Harvey.
It's all about encouraging men from rural and regional communities to try their hand at something different, requiring absolutely no dance training or experience.
"It's dance that is made for what you're good at," Annette said.
"No matter the skill level, we promise we will make you look amazing, so why not get out of your comfort zone and try it out?"
The project is choreographed to emphasise the strengths of the participating men, with recent workshops in Harvey and Kalgoorlie shining a light on some hidden gems.
"In Harvey there were some men with incredible martial arts skills so we choreographed parts of the dance for them and in Kalgoorlie there was a really strong performance quality, which was a great inspiration," Annette said.
"Now we can't wait to see what the men of Mandurah have to offer."
The group of fledgling performers at the recent workshops included farmers, tradies, miners, comedians and accountants with zero dance experience but plenty of commitment and openness to try something a little out of their comfort zones.
At its heart, The Beauty Index is an original dance work, set in a mythical world where men struggle to balance elements of beauty and fear.
Local men perform alongside community members from Denmark, all supported by a team of professional artists.
The project is something new, it breaks down stereotypes and contributes to the community, it's open to any man who is willing to step forward.
"All we really need is for men to show up and give it a go," Annette said.
"In the other towns involved in The Beauty Index we've had men join the project for a wonderful variety of reasons.
"Whether it's because they want to be a positive role model for their sons, meet new people or contribute to their community, we can't wait to meet the men of Mandurah and create a powerful performance with them."
Do you know someone who would have a go? Taster workshops will be offered at Mandurah Performing Arts Centre on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 February 2021 from 2-4pm.
The final performance in Mandurah happens on May 1 2021. Register your interest at https://annettecarmichael.com.au/past-projects/the-beauty-index/
