The WA Liberals have committed to creating a better experience for those boating through South Yunderup, with the party pledging $1 million to upgrading the wharf and surrounding areas at Sandy Cove Beach Reserve on Thursday morning.
State opposition leader and Dawesville MP Zak Kirkup joined Murray-Wellington candidate Michelle Boylan to announce the election promise, which would incorporate provisions for multiple houseboats and smaller power boats, the construction of a promenade to separate the swimming area and boat traffic, and gangways to improve accessibility.
The commitment follows a bunch of community concerns about the existing facility, which frequently sees boats and swimmers using the same area.
"This upgrade is part of the Liberals plan to keep our communities together by investing in the facilities that local residents deserve for a better, brighter tomorrow," Mr Kirkup said.
"As the member for Dawesville, I know first-hand how popular boating activities are to people in this area. Enjoying time with family and friends on the water is a distinct part of the local lifestyle.
"Our waterways also provide an attractive destination for visitors from Perth and the broader region to go fishing, crabbing and boating along the Murray River and Peel Estuary.
"The Liberals are proud to invest in initiatives that will continue to enhance this area, boost community spirit and encourage families to be involved in outdoor activities."
Ms Boylan said upgrades to the area would also provide local businesses, such as the Sandy Cove Tavern, with a much-needed boost.
"It's going to be great for families and the community, and that's what I'm really passionate about," she said.
"But also these businesses here. If we can draw more people in then it really encourages them to grow.
"Sandy Cove is a popular destination within the South Yunderup canal network for local families and visitors, who come to this location from right around the Peel Region.
"This project will enhance their enjoyment of the area, as well as making it safer and more accessible as part of a master plan to manage mixed boating and recreational use.
"This is an exciting project for the South Yunderup community and the many local boat owners I have spoken to that will benefit from the upgrade."
