"I come from a musical family, and I was 11 years old when I started playing the trombone," says Mandurah's latest Local Legend Tony Schraven.
Mr Schraven, predominantly a trumpet player, said it was his love of music that makes him do what he does.
"Music brings people together, across all ages, and that's why I love what I do."
Mr Schraven has been recognised for his dedication to community performing arts and his involvement in the Mandurah Concert Band spanning more than two decades.
At November's council meeting, Tony was awarded by Mayor Rhys Williams for his leadership in music and with the community band over 23 years, and now mentoring young band members to preserve the band's future.
"If you've attended local ANZAC Day, Remembrance Day or RSL memorial services over the past few decades, chances are you've heard the stirring sounds of Tony's bugle playing," Mayor Williams said.
"By all accounts, Tony's leadership and management on the band's committee has been outstanding, and had led to many successes.
"Under Tony's guidance on the committee, the Mandurah Concert Band has performed at many community functions including the opening of the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre, Crab Fest, Christmas Carols, Australia Day, and the opening of the Mandurah Train Station to name a few.
"He has also contributed to many volunteer roles in the music and performing arts industries, fostering the needs of both young people and seniors in Mandurah and beyond.
"We congratulate and thank Tony for his dedicated contributions to music and arts within our community, he is a very deserving Local Legend winner."
The Mandurah Concert Band started in 1997, and since that time Tony has been President (for 18 years), librarian, publicity officer, bookings officer and a band member. Through his leadership, the Mandurah Concert Band has regularly been awarded Best Country Band accolades.
In 2018 Tony was awarded West Australian Bands Association's (WABA) President of Association and Bandsman of the Year. He was also an executive officer for the National Band Council of Australia, and is an Honourary Member of The Brixham Brass Band in Devon, UK.
