Mandurah golf prodigy Kathryn Norris was named Sports Person of the Year at the City of Mandurah Sports Awards last Wednesday night.
The young superstar had an outstanding season despite the interference of COVID-19, posting a bunch of wins across several impressive displays including a win at the 2020 Tasmania Amateur Open Championships.
She finished as the runner-up in both the WA Amateur Championships and Riversdale Cup tournaments, and was also named the 2019 ladies state team captain.
Alongside her achievements on the fairways, Norris also found the time to raise more than $15,000 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation in support of her mum Lynda, who is battling the disease.
Also celebrated on the night were the efforts of young Rockingham-Mandurah District Cricket Club star Corey Wasley, who took out Junior Sports Person of the Year award.
Wasley captained the WA state 15s team at the national championships in Ballarat back in February 2020, and was selected in the Australian under 16s team as a result of his performance.
He also scored a WA district cricket record 265 for Rockingham-Mandurah in the under 14s at the back end of the season.
Wakeboarder Symmone Kennedy took out Masters Sports Person of the Year, while a highly commended achievement award went to Zoe Beacham.
In group accolades it was Peel Thunder's WAFL Women's side taking out Team of the Year after their prolific premiership victory, while the Mandurah Junior Cricket Club was dubbed Club of the Year.
Mandurah City Football Club's NPL under 14s side claimed Junior Team of the Year honours.
Jamie Hunter (Mandurah Mustangs Integrated Football Team) and Joanne Fitzpatrick (Mandurah Netball Association) were named the male and female volunteers of the year respectively, while Fishability Mandurah was in the spotlight as the best inclusion program or event.
City of Manudrah mayor Rhys Williams congratulated the winners and thanked the individuals, clubs and volunteers for their important contributions to sport and recreation in the region.
"It was great to be able to recognise the outstanding local sports stars, and people who work hard in the background to bring enjoyment of sport to everyone in our community," he said.
"Local sport is essential for a strong, healthy and happy community, which is why it's so important we continue to grow grassroots competitions in the region.
"It is well known how important sport is in building self esteem, strengthening mental as well as physical health and connecting communities - and I thank all those people who are working hard to ensure sport plays such a huge role in Mandurah life.
"Well done to our sporting superstars officially recognised in the 2020 Sports Awards for your achievements and I look forward to following your future successes."
