It is with disgust that I have heard today that the New Year's fireworks and Crab Fest have been cancelled. Why? I listened to mayor's comments on the radio and I would assume many others are disappointed to hear this too. Not once in the mayor's interview did he give a clear indication of the reasons why. In fact Mayor, you contradicted yourself on a few occasions. Can you explain how we can have COVID-friendly family events when you are canceling two family events? You also talked about bringing business into Mandurah, when in fact what you and the council have done is the opposite. People of Mandurah will no longer trust that any event will go ahead. The visitors that normally come will feel the same; and in fact you will be sending them to more friendly towns and cities - Rockingham being one of them. The people of Mandurah have put up with so much this year and have done so with such nobility. Everyone I have spoken to was looking forward to the end of 2020 and bringing in 2021 with a fun-filled evening with friends and families; ending with a sky filled with colour, allowing us to smile and hope for a better year ahead.

Yalgorup tourism
The council's proposed Yalgorup National Park walk and cycle trails are a great idea, however there are many ideal natural areas in Mandurah that could be utilised to create a network of trails throughout the region. The Serpentine River is very scenic as is the Rockingham Lakes Regional Park behind Lakelands. Both areas are completely unutilised. A lot of the areas close to Mandurah include pristine native woodland and forest as well as some degraded areas. The Creery wetlands is an example of a managed area that is not being managed. If the council wishes to run a bulldozer through Yalgorup National Park in order to stimulate the tourism economy, maybe they should ensure they are protecting the eco-tourism areas they are already exploiting. We love to advertise the estuary as a fishing destination, but many baby dolphins now get entangled in fishing line. The council should focus on rehabilitation of the areas at risk before it cuts tracks through our last piece of unspoiled beauty.

Crippling the country
Our local federal MP, Andrew Hastie, has sided with his federal cohorts in an attempt to financially cripple our country by fueling the fire that has led to the decimation of exports to our most important customer, China. Now he is begging for money so this decimation can continue. Shame, Andrew, shame!
