Are you never too old to fall in love?
It's a question explored by Mandurah Senior High School graduate Sarah Harris in a romantic comedy at Melville Theatre, aptly-titled Old Love, written by Norm Foster and directed by Vanessa Jensen.
Divorced man Bud meets the recently-widowed Molly - the wife of his former boss - again after many years, when he comes to pay his respects.
The two narrate the story of their initial meetings and how their lives have now led them to the point of taking a chance on happiness in old love.
Foster is considered Canada's most produced playwright, known for his humour and insight into the trials and tribulations of everyday life, and is frequently compared to US playwright Neil Simon.
Harris plays the young version of Molly, as the present-day version reminisces about her past.
"She is a determined woman who unfortunately is married to a stronger, more determined man," she said.
"As a result, Molly's dreams come second to his.
"This is my first time sustaining an accent that isn't Australian or received pronunciation English so I'm hoping to rise to the challenge."
Originally becoming involved in acting at high school, Harris soon embraced the performing arts by going on to study drama at Edith Cowan University and appearing at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre, Murray Music and Drama and Stirling and Melville Theatres.
"Old Love appealed because I love Vanessa Jensen's directing style and trust her vision when she puts together a show," she said.
"I love working with her and I know she'll choose a show that is ready to be seen.
"Old Love is just that - a light romance with a bit of humour - and exactly what the end of this year needs.
"I was really won over with the audition pieces, too, because there's a lot of fun to be had with the lighter parts of this play."
Jensen said, after a difficult year for everyone, Melville Theatre wanted to present a lighter play that would bring a positive end to 2020.
"Old Love certainly fit the bill because it is gentle, humorous and its underpinning theme is hope," she said.
Old Love plays at 8pm November 19, 20, 26, 27, 28, December 3, 4 and 5 with a 2pm matinee November 29. Tickets are $23, $18 concession - book at www.TAZTix.com.au.
