The community is invited to have a say on the proposed design of an enclosed dog park to be located at Leslie Street Reserve.
The City of Mandurah has been considering a dog park for a number of years and set the ball in motion in April 2019, asking residents for their thoughts about seven potential locations.
The proposed design comes following extensive public consultation and the establishment of a working group consisting of City officers, councillors, and interested community members.
While responsible off-lead areas for dogs already exist within Mandurah, the enclosed dog park, which is expected to attract more than 80 dog owners a day, will help to contribute to better socialised dogs and create a community space for dog owners.
The project will cost $213,492 to build and a further $30,000 a year will be needed to maintain the park.
I collected 562 signatures over only three days to investigate the viability of a fully fenced dog park in Mandurah.
- Working group member Shaun Spice
Working group member Shaun Spice spoke in support of the enclosed dog park in a deputation to council on October 27.
"In Demember 2017 I collected 562 signatures over only three days to investigate the viability of a fully fenced dog park in Mandurah," he said.
"Since then the City has received a lot of interest on the Mandurah Matters website with 4901 visitors.
"The main benefit I see is that the park creates community and responsible dog ownership."
Residents will have until Sunday, November 22 to provide feedback on the concept design, which includes dog exercise and play areas, safe and secure entry points, landscaping and seating.
Mandurah mayor Rhys Williams encouraged the community to get involved and have a say on the draft design.
"I'm very happy that we're getting so close to delivering this fenced dog park and what we need now is to make sure we get the design right - that's where community input is so important," he said.
"This has to be a park that is not only enjoyed by our many dog-loving residents, but most importantly, by our resident dogs as well.
"We've had such positive feedback to date and I thank all those residents who have so far been involved in the creation of this park."
