'I'm just excited': Mandurah netball product eyes premiership with East Fremantle

The Mandurah Netball Association product has burst onto the West Australian Netball League scene this season, becoming a key cog in the midcourt for the top-two East Fremantle Sharks.

The West Australian ranked her as high as number two in their top 20 players of the season, labeling the young superstar "easily the best midcourter of the season."

She was listed behind only West Coast Warriors sharp shooter and Waroona product Donnelle Wallam, who came in at number one.

Now, at just 19 years old, Sigley hoping to help her side go all the way as they chase a championship.

"I'm just excited," she said.

"To be starting for the team as we step on the court for finals, it's not something I was expecting at the start of the season."

Sigley and her Sharks teammates will be looking to cause an upset when they take on the Wallam-led West Coast Warriors at the Gold Netball Centre on Friday night, kicking off what she hopes is a long and prosperous finals campaign.

Much will fall on the rising star's shoulders in the match-up, as East Fremantle hopes to control the pace of the game and keep the ball as far from Wallam as possible.

"Defensively, we have to get some pressure on them," Sigley said.

"We need to wreak a bit of havoc and hopefully make life hard for them when they go into attack.

"On the flip side of that, we'll need to make sure we're clean we go forward.

"It's a huge task, but I reckon we can get it done."

Sigley's star is also shining outside of the WANL circles, with the local legend also recently selected to the under 19 Netball Australia Centre of Excellence squad.

Usually the squad would be selected from the best-performing players at the national championships, but with the tournaments canned due to COVID-19 selectors instead studied bodies of work from the 2020 season.

And not many had strung together a season quite like Sigley.

"This would have been my last nationals so I was really disappointed to miss out, but to still be named in the team based on how I've performed this season is rewarding," she said.

"I've worked really hard this year and it's exciting to be part of the squad again."

Sigley will now head to the Australian Institute of Sport for a specialised training camp with the rest of the national team in December.

But for now, she remains fixed on seeing East Fremantle to a win.

"I'm just focused on getting the win tonight," she said.

"It would be really exciting to make a finals run with this team."

The semi final clash between the Warriors and Sharks kicks off at the Gold Netball Centre in Perth on Friday, 8.30pm.
