South Australia man charged with breaching COVID-19 self-isolation rules after WA pub visit

The 23-year-old from South Australia is accused of attending a licensed venue in Jurien Bay on July 22 and drinking alcohol for several hours.

About 12:55am on Thursday 23 July 2020 Jurien Bay police were called to a home in Doust Street in relation to a man armed with a knife acting in an aggressive manner.

"Upon arrival the attending police officers forced entry to the residence and it will be alleged they were approached by a man armed with a knife," a police spokesperson said.

"The man initially refused to drop the knife, and one of the police officers drew their firearm.

"The man dropped the knife a short time later at which time he was arrested and placed in handcuffs."

It will also be alleged the man had earlier smashed a rear passenger window of a Toyota Hilux that was parked nearby.

The man was charged with 'Being armed in a way that may cause fear' and 'Criminal Damage or Destruction of Property'. He was refused bail and appeared in the Geraldton Magistrates Court on Thursday 23 July, and is next due to appear in the same court today, Monday 27 July.

During the course of the investigation it was established the man had arrived in WA for work via a flight from South Australia on Monday 13 July. At the time of his arrival he was directed to self-quarantine at a residence in Jurien Bay for a period of 14 days.

It will be alleged the man breached the quarantine directive by attending the licensed venue in Jurien Bay on the evening of Wednesday 22 July, where he sat with friends and consumed alcohol for several hours.

The 23-year-old man has been advised he is being charged under the Emergency Management Act with 'Failed to Comply with a Direction', with the additional offence being added to his charges being heard in the Geraldton Magistrates Court today, Monday 27 July 2020.
