Auction result | One of the few auctions held in Bendigo since February this year

A Thistle Street property in the heart of Golden Square sold at auction on Saturday. In an uncertain Covid-19 environment there was an excellent crowd of about 20 people.

"It was a better than expected response for an auction really, as it is one of the few auctions held in Bendigo since last February," CR Martin real estate agent Clive Martin said.

There was keen interest before the auction, as the agents were showing prospective purchasers through the home every couple of days.

There has been lots of activity in the regional areas REIV president Leah Calnan said. "Reports are all very positive, with an increase in Melbourne interest in regional properties," Leah said. "There's less hustle and bustle, and you can grow your own vegies. The First Home Owners Grant is also creating lots of activity."

Agent Linda Currie said although everyone is still worried about the virus, the property market for both vendors and purchasers in Bendigo is very good.

"The Thistle Street property was in an excellent location, ripe for development or as a renovation, which suits many in the market," Linda said.

The property sits on three titles on some of the oldest real estate crown allotments on the goldfields.

"It was an interesting date for the auction, just after the end of the financial year, but there was keen interest prior to the day," Mr Martin said.

The winning bidders were very excited. "We are going to renovate the home, to give it four bedrooms and two bathrooms. The plan is to rent it out because the property is in an excellent area, close to St John of God, the police headquarters and with a supermarket opposite."

The vendors should be very happy according to Clive. "The price of $305,000 was a realistic and good price for the vendor and the purchasers too."

There is some planned development for the two houses next door, properties which are still in their 1930s original condition.

On the south side of lower Thistle Street, this auction result reflects the steady interest in the regional real estate market.
