Young people in the Peel region are being invited to take up a dramatic opportunity and engage with the work of the world's most influential playwright.
Now in its fifth year, Canning MP Andrew Hastie's annual Shakespeare competition invites local students in years 10-12 to record and perform a monologue from William Shakespeare's work.
Mr Hastie said the competition provided a unique opportunity to gain performance experience.
"Shakespeare has had an incredible impact on the English language," he said.
"The competition encourages students to gain a greater appreciation of Shakespeare's works, while giving them the chance to practice their theatrical skills live on a professional stage.
"There are major prizes, including $1000 for the winner. Our expert judges also give finalists feedback after their performances, which previous participants have found particularly encouraging and useful.
"Any student considering a career in the performing arts, who wants to improve their public speaking, or simply wants a better appreciation of the Shakespeare and the English language is encouraged to apply.
"It's a great opportunity to show off your theatrical potential."
Students are required to submit a video of up to 2.5 minutes of a monologue performance taken from one of Shakespeare's plays by 5pm on Friday, August 7.
Finalists will then be selected to perform live onstage in front of an audience and panel of expert judges at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, August 22.
This year's panelists include Senior Lecturer at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Glenda Linscott, and there are cash prizes for first, second and third place.
A workshop will be held on July 25 at the Foundation Christian College Performing Arts Centre to assist interested students in preparing their monologues.
