Rhonda Griechen of Mandurah responds to the Mandurah Mail's article: What happens after COVID-19? City of Mandurah plans 'aspirational reboot' post-pandemic
The best way forward is big projects for Mandurah. That was the strategy after the great depression.
For Mandurah, I have always advocated that medical education, with a training hospital was the way to better health, and education and jobs. We need to build a university hospital. It also need to be on a train line. So lets extend that line out to Pinjarra and down to Busselton.
It is no good to continue to prop up the Peel Health Campus, this virus has shown us that very clearly.
A hospital that is university and TAFE campus and research centre is the way to go. Include a manufacturing hub for the production of medical equipment and medications.
We have all the resources we need in this country, including very smart people. With education we can become the world leaders in medicine. For local and overseas students lets make it Mandurah as a preferred provider.
Offer scholarships to Indigenous and disadvantaged people. How amazing would it be to see Mandurah provide Indigenous doctors help their communities.
A university campus can also have accommodation for students and for nurses. That is how hospitals used to function, back to basics will help us move forward again.
A hospital will encourage people to buy down here in Mandurah, and we have a wide range of properties here to suit people from all socio-economic backgrounds. We cannot rely just on commodities any more. We have to be come a more self sufficient nation.
The other ideas are, water from the Ord a pipe line to encourage more food production. A train line all the way to Busselton to link up with the airport there. A train line to the city from the airport.
For long term tourist attractions to Mandurah all year round. Make it a city of sculptures one that compares to places like Madrid. Build it and they will come. Mandurah's own field of dreams.
These projects can start now in the planning stage and be ready once we are able to return to work.
