Mandurah's Crab Fest event now looks likely to be cancelled in light of the "evolving status" of coronavirus concerns.
Just one day out from the city's biggest annual event, Mandurah mayor Rhys Williams released a statement on Friday regarding the possibility of a cancellation.
"In light of the evolving status of COVID-19 since last night, I am having discussions this morning with WA's Chief Health Officer, who is the authorised person under the Public Health Act for decisions on public gatherings, with regard to the status of Crab Fest," he said.
"Based on the most recent advice, it is now unlikely that Crab Fest will go ahead.
"We will keep the community informed as this develops."
As recent as yesterday the City of Mandurah informed the Mail that Crab Fest would run as planned, but the decision came into question on the back of new developments overnight surrounding the pandemic.
Residents flooded local Facebook pages to voice their concern about the event going ahead.
"Mandurah will be known as the epicentre of the COVID-19 in WA. This event needs to be cancelled," one commenter wrote.
"Money before people guys it's that simple," another added.
More to come.
