Community sporting clubs throughout the Peel region are being encouraged to apply for funding to promote healthy options at club-run canteens.
Applications for the winter funding round of the state government's Healthy Sporting Club program are now open to help local clubs provide healthier food and drinks.
Grants of up to $4000 will be available to purchase canteen equipment and train canteen managers on how to provide healthier food and drink options.
Run by Healthway, the program provided more than $300,000 worth of funding to 86 sports clubs across WA in 2019.
Murray-Wellington MP Robyn Clarke encouraged all local groups to apply for a grant.
"Local clubs already deliver so many social and health benefits beyond the playing field," she said.
"The Healthy Sporting Club program takes that one step further and is a fantastic initiative to help local sport clubs promote healthy lifestyles to members and spectators."
Health Minister Roger Cook wished clubs good luck in applying for the current round of funding.
"Sport clubs are ideally placed to role model healthy behaviours, as healthy eating fuels a healthy body, improving physical performance both on and off the field," he said.
"Through this program, clubs have participated in nutrition seminars and we have helped clubs purchase canteen items to help improve the availability of healthy foods."
Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray said community sport was a "terrific vehicle" to drive healthier lifestyles.
"The Healthy Sporting Club program compliments that further by encouraging better eating habits inside our grassroots clubs," he said.
"Local clubs deliver participants so many social and health benefits beyond the playing field and this initiative adds yet another aspect to encourage young people to make healthier choices in all aspects of life."
Applications will close at midday on Friday, March 13.
