A quartet of Curtin University medical students will use Mandurah's health facilities to master their craft as part of the newly-formed Peel Regional Clinical School.
Nicole Tan, Christopher Chi, Philippa Hall, Neha Paranjape will form the inaugural student-base for the school, with the four set to join the community to carry out the entire fourth year of their studies.
During that year they will gain first hand experience working out of local medical clinics including Dynamic Doctors Group, Peelwood Family Medical Practice, Pinjarra Doctors, and Sonic HealthPlus Mandurah.
As the year progresses, the students will join the Peel Health Campus and undertake other local community health placements to expand their knowledge.
The initiative to open a medical school in the Peel region comes on the back of years of hard work behind the scenes.
Peel Regional Clinical School dean Dr Jacqueline Sutton said she was thrilled to welcome the inaugural students.
"We are excited to welcome these passionate and bright students to our community and show them the best of what Peel has on offer," Dr Sutton said.
"Such intensive placements are invaluable to the students' learning and have the potential to encourage future doctors to consider returning to live and work in Peel."
As part of its plans to establish the Peel Regional Clinical School over the coming years, Curtin University is working closely with partners in Peel to bring students to the region.
Immersions to regional and rural settings have the power to ignite a propensity in students to consider working in such environments in the future.
