What do you love most about Christmas?
This is the question that Captain Scott Ellery asked the crowd at the launch of the Mandurah Forum's Kmart Wishing Tree late last month.
It was met with a chorus of responses, the most popular ones being family, food and presents.
Captain Ellery agreed with the spirited response but said it wasn't the case for everyone.
"Sadly, for many in our community these are unrealistic pleasures," he said.
"Many people don't have enough money for food, let alone enough to buy presents for their loved ones.
"For those without families or loved ones near them, Christmas can be a stark reminder of grief and loneliness."
Fortunately community groups, organisations, schools and businesses are banding together to support local families during this Christmas season.
Community groups are collecting food and making gifts, schools have donated food and toys, businesses have been collection points for generous donations.
Community agencies such as WestAus Crisis, Department of Communities, Halo, The Salvation Army, Anglicare, St Vincent De Paul and many other were able to secure a Lotteries West Grant to purchase food for their Christmas Hamper Appeal, running from December 16 -19.
This appeal alone will meet the needs of over 1500 families across our region, supplying food for the entire family and making sure each child receives a Christmas present.
Halo will also be providing a Christmas lunch so that no-one needs to be alone on Christmas day.
The holidays are a time of joy and thankfulness, but for many it can also be a time of great hardship and sadness.
"I am reminded of a line from one of my favorite Christmas carols, "A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices, for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn," Captain Ellery said.
"The true meaning of Christmas reminds us there is always hope, especially for those who are weary.
"It is a privilege to be part of a community so invested in bringing hope to others. This really is the best gift that anyone could give this Christmas."
