Works have begun to redevelop the Murray River Square and Foreshore, enhancing the popular site with exciting additions and improvements.
The revitalised amenity will incorporate shaded seating areas, improved pathways and lighting, a small-scale amphitheatre with stage, public art and Aboriginal interpretation.
There will also be improved water accessibility through the construction of a jetty for non-motorised vessels.
Due diligence is ensuring coordination and integration with associated works or proposals for adjoining George Street properties, including the Exchange Hotel and police station.
The redevelopment will achieve uninterrupted views from James Street to the grassed slope leading to the river.
Site preparation commenced in late August and major works started in September with drainage and service works to conclude in the coming weeks, enabling the construction of retaining walls and laying of paving.
Established trees within the Town Square were relocated to accommodate the new design.
New furniture, including seating and street furniture, shelters, Aboriginal artwork, lighting and additional trees, will be installed in the Town Square in late December and completed by Christmas.
Foreshore works, including the establishment of the jetty, a stage with associated shelter and amphitheatre, viewing platforms, pathways and lighting, will continue into 2020.
The redevelopment of the Murray River Square and adjacent foreshore will create a high quality, vibrant, public space - a focal point for the town.
It will enhance the character of Pinjarra, integrate with surrounding sites, encourage activity, longer visitation and a diverse range of formal and informal activities including events in both the square and foreshore areas.
The redevelopment is a pivotal outcome of the Murray River Foreshore Master Plan. Other nodes already complete include the three-stage Cantwell Park Playground development.
Together with the Pinjarra Court House refurbishment, main street building facade upgrades and Exchange Hotel conservation and redevelopment, Pinjarra is receiving a much-needed face lift that will attract tourists looking for an authentic, historic yet vibrant country town experience.
Efforts will be further bolstered by the Pinjarra Heavy Haulage Deviation which will help to create a pedestrian-friendly town centre, with reduced traffic congestion and improved street scaping and beautification, as well as heightened business growth and tourism appeal.
The project is proudly supported by the state government's Regional Grant Scheme and Local Projects Local Jobs Grant Scheme, Lotterywest, Alcoa and the Shire of Murray.
David Bolt is the Shire of Murray president.
