Community members are being urged to take part in Mandurah's biggest clean-up event this weekend, Reel It In.
Held on Saturday, October 19, the event will focus on cleaning up the Mandurah Estuary in memory of Luca.
Mandurah's resident dolphin calf died in August after becoming entangled in fishing line for the third time this year.
Officers from the Department of Biodiversity Conservations and Attractions working alongside volunteers in an effort to free Luca but, with the condition of his dorsal fin deteriorating, Luca sadly passed away.
The Reel It In event will be hosted on Tangaroa Blue's national beach clean up event day and be based from two sites - the Port Bouvard Yacht Club at the Dawesville Cut and the Mariners Cover boat ramp, near the Creery Wetlands.
Small groups of volunteers will target beaches and foreshore areas, while scuba divers will focus on problem jetties and platforms where fishing line accumulates in the water.
The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions' Parks and Wildlife Service has partnered with local environmental groups to coordinate the event including Peel-Harvey Catchment Council, Estuary Guardians Mandurah and the Coastal Waste Warriors as well as John Tonkin College, Underwater Explorers Club of Western Australia, Oceano Dive Centre, Mandurah Cruises, Recfishwest, Tackle World Miami.
Environment Minister Stephen Dawson encouraged local residents of all ages to join the effort and make a difference.
"The Department's 'Reel it in' fishing line bin project provides dedicated bins for discarded tackle and bait bags at popular fishing sites and is helping reduce fishing waste entering the marine environment," he said.
"Discarded fishing line can have significant impacts on our wildlife, as it doesn't break down in the environment.
"The event is a great way to make a difference to the health of the Estuary by removing rubbish and discarded fishing waste before it ends up in the water."
Mandurah MP David Templeman said community members would be helping to collect rubbish from and clean up one of the region's greatest assets.
"I'm pleased to see this important event being held in Mandurah to improve the amenity and health of the Estuary," he said.
"This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who enjoys spending time around the Estuary to give back to the environment."
The Reel It In event is family-friendly and will run from 9am-1pm.
Please bring your own gloves and tongs to pick up rubbish and stay after the clean up to enjoy a complimentary sausage sizzle and cold drink.
Registration, briefings, equipment and a first aid station will be at the Port Bouvard Yacht Club.
For those interested in taking part at Creery Wetlands, Mandurah Cruises will be transporting volunteers by boat the Boundary Island before returning to Mariners Cover boat ramp. If you would like to volunteer at this site, please email natalie@mandurahcruises.com.au.
