Messages of love and support have flocked in following the tragic death of Mandurah teenage motocross superstar Rhys "Roo" Burnett, who died in a crash during a race in Manjimup on Sunday afternoon.
The star 17-year-old racer was leading the way in the final round of the state championships event before making what coach and close friend Luke Davis described as a "typical race error" and losing control of the bike.
"Rhys was known for his hole-shot and you just know he had his trademark grin on him when he turned that corner," Davis said.
"Obviously what's followed is a tragic circumstance, but we take some solace knowing Rhys was doing exactly what he loved just before he passed."
Rhys was one of Western Australia's brightest rising stars on the motocross scene, having taken out a state championship in 2018 before finishing in the top 10 at the national championships in the same year.
But he was just as beloved off the track, said Davis, who will remember his friend as a cheeky character and a faithful mate.
"Rhys and I really bonded through racing. He became my best mate," he said.
"He had so much talent and he was always grinning and cracking jokes whenever he could.
"He'll be sorely missed."
Davis has set up a GoFundMe page to help ease the financial burden left on Rhys' family.
