The finals of the 2019 Canning Shakespeare Competition were held last weekend, with students performing monologues from the works of Shakespeare live onstage at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre.
Twenty local students competed in the finals on August 31, performing from a diverse range of sources.
First place was claimed by Mandurah Baptist College year 11 student Indi Thompson, who performed as Phoebe (Act III Scene V) from As You Like it.
Mandurah Catholic College year 11 Tom Crocker took second place by performing as Benedick (Act II, Scene III) from Much Ado About Nothing.
Third Place was won by Ava Berryman, who is in year 11 at Mandurah Catholic College and performed as Beatrice (Act IV Scene I) in Much Ado About Nothing.
The performances were judged by three professional actors - Glenda Linscott, Julia Moody and Hamish White.
Canning MP Andrew Hastie hosts the event annually and said it was a success again in 2019.
"There was plenty of passion and talent on display in this year's performances," he said.
"It's a privilege to organise this competition every year, and I admire these students for taking a risk and having a go. I hope they were able to learn and grow from the experience."
