Assumption Catholic Primary School students have produced excellent results in the 2018 NAPLAN assessments, according to Mandurah school's principal.
The school has been identified by Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) as having demonstrated a substantially above average gain in reading and/or numeracy achievement, as measured by NAPLAN assessments for years 3-5.
This is the second commendation Assumption has received from ACARA.
Principal Kerrie Merritt said she attributes the success to a number of factors, which began five years ago with dedicated changes to the school's teaching and learning.
"Our early childhood classes now have a focus on play-based, inquiry-based learning, with investigations being related to the student's interests," she said.
"This continues through to year 6, with education research projects that focus on the skill set with the student's interest at the core.
"In literacy and numeracy, we use our data to differentiate the teaching and learning for all students.
"Synthetic phonics is employed across all year levels along with dedicated literacy interventions Phun (Synthetic Phonics Support Program) and LLI (Levelled Literacy Intervention)."
Mrs Merritt said whole school mindfulness has also provided the students with an avenue to focus on their learnings and had a significant impact on the whole school community.
"Having consistency in the teaching and learning in our school has enabled us to focus on the individual needs of the students," she said.
"This in turn is now evident across our whole school results."
Ms Merritt said Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA) was committed to providing the best learning and development opportunities for every catholic school student across the state.
