Young Mandurah basketball stars set to learn from the best

Aspiring youngsters Tom Newson, Ashton Hewett, Angelina Dimasi and Sophia Bassett-Scarfe will be learning from the Mandurah Magic's finest after being announced as the recipients of the club's 2019 State Basketball League scholarship program.

The junior quartet will be spending as much time as possible with the Magic's men and women's SBL outfits, as they look to one day stake out their spots in the teams.

The program aims to give the Magic's junior stars an up-close experience with the club's star players, with the four set to soak up first-hand lessons from the likes of men's stars Shaun Stewart and Travis Durnin and women's legends Casey Mihovilovich and Rachel Halleen.

As part of the scholarship the young guns will be listening in on pre-game, half time and post-game speeches with the squads, while also training with them during the week.

All four have spent time playing junior basketball for the Magic's WABL program, with Sophia saying she was excited to be taking another step towards becoming an SBL player.

"It's really exciting to be picked," she said.

"To see how the experienced players work both on and off the floor and to see how hard they train is going to be great.

"It's going to be really good for our own basketball."

The four will be on deck to learn from their mentors as the Mandurah Magic take on the Joondalup Wolves at home this Saturday night.

The women's game tips off at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre at 5pm, with the men to follow at 7pm.
