Dawesville MP Zak Kirkup has thrown his support behind a new police union campaign advocating for more recognition for West Australian officers.
The campaign seeks to show the community that police officers not only care for themselves and their colleagues but they care for the community and everyone in it.
According to the WA police union, the commitment is about everyday people committing to caring for police officers, like how police officers commit to caring for the community.
Police union president Harry Arnott said officers were committed to providing 24/7 support for the community, even in the darkest of hours.
"The extremely dangerous situations police officers are placed in, and pressure they are put under, is indescribable," he said.
"The trauma which is experienced by our police men and women can stay with them forever and have lifelong affects such as PTSD and mental health illnesses.
"The #Care4Cops commitment campaign aims to get the community behind our police officers, who risk their lives for the benefit of all of us.
"By the community showing their commitment through social media, it's just a small action that is going to mean a great deal to our members."
Mr Kirkup said the police force in the Mandurah district went above and beyond to ensure the safety of our community.
"The #Care4Cops campaign initiated by the WA police union is a great opportunity to reaffirm our support for our local police officers and show we care for their health, wellbeing and welfare," he said.
"I am particularly proud of our local Mandurah police, who time and again serve our community with unflinching courage and bravery in the face of danger.
"I encourage everyone in Mandurah to think about how lucky we are to have such great local police officers and pledge their support on social media for our local police by using the hashtag #Care4Cops."
