Austin Cove Baptist College students joined thousands of other children across Australia by participating in National Walk to School Day last week.
The event, which took place on the morning of Friday, 17 May, is an annual national celebration where primary school students of all ages are encouraged to walk safely to school.
National Walk to School Day is now in its 20th year and has been integral in teaching young people about the importance of keeping physically active.
It also spruiks the impact that humans can have on the environment, with walking rather than driving vehicles making a difference in reducing pollution.
Austin Cove Baptist College students were delighted to join in with this community event, which has been devised to promote both road safety and health.
We wanted to communicate the message that active kids are healthy kids.
Students gathered in a layover area on the side of South Yunderup road, a little more than a kilometre from school.
Teachers accompanied the students on the last leg of their journey to school.
Many students walked from home and joined us at the main entrance to the school.
When the participants reached school, all students received a sticker for their participation and entered in the draw to win a scooter or a Garmin Vivofit Fitness Band.
An exciting part of the day was the Walk to School breakfast.
Austin Lakes IGA kindly sponsored the breakfast, with students receiving a mouth-watering breakfast of bacon and cheese rolls, juice boxes, milk, yoghurt and fresh fruit.
It was great to see lots of students and parents joined in this year's Walk Safely to School day.
