Foundation Christian College playgroup, Foundies' Friends Playgroup, is celebrating its second year of being part of the college community.
Relieving principal Keith Newby said the playgroup had been a valuable addition to the college environment.
"Playgroup is a wonderful introduction to school life and it provides parents with an opportunity to become familiar with the ethos and culture of the college," he said.
"It is also a lovely way for new parents to meet one another prior to their children attending kindergarten; we love having them here."
Playgroup coordinator Kerry Norris is an early childhood teacher and leads each playgroup session.
"We see playgroup as a time for children to learn social skills and social cues; to learn to be a friend and act positively around other children," she said.
Each playgroup session has a theme that is incorporated in their story time, songs, instruments, play, craft and fruit time.
"We have created a program that incorporates learning through play and this learning assists children with the transition into kindergarten or pre-primary," Mrs Norris said.
"This term's theme is learning our colours and this week's theme colour was blue.
"The children collected blue objects, made a bath of water turned blue and then enjoyed a group activity to see what objects floated or sank.
"The amount of learning in that exercise alone is incredible and all we see as adults is that the children were playing."
Playgroup is beneficial for parents too.
"For mums, our playgroup provides a safe place be supported - there is always someone to talk to or watch the kids while having a cup of tea," Ms Norris said.
"It is also great to see dads come along to our playgroup; every week we have at least one dad join us."
Foundies' Friends Playgroup is affiliated with Playgroup WA and has places available for new members.
They meet every Friday during the school term from 9.30am-11am at the Foundation Christian College Early Learning Centre at 115 Waldron Boulevard in Greenfields.
