The Mandurah Magic men went down in back-to-back games against Perth and Willetton over the weekend, despite strong showings from all-star guard Shaun Stewart and rising star Travis Durnin.
Hosting the Redbacks in the first of the two showdowns, Mandurah went down 88-89 in a heart-breaker losing the lead with just 10 seconds on the clock.
The Magic led by two when a James Cannell layup put them ahead with 1:34 on the clock, and they held their lead until Perth's Jayden Coburn made his own layup to tie the game with just 10 seconds remaining.
Coburn was fouled on the play, and went on to miss a crucial free throw that would have given his team the lead.
But his late miss didn't matter in the end, with Issac Gattorna collecting a pair of offensive rebounds and eventually being fouled by Durnin to head to the line.
Gattorna missed his first free throw but maintained just enough composure to hit the second, giving Perth a one-point lead they would clutch to as the clock wound down to zero.
Stewart finished with a stunning 35 points, seven assists, four steals and three rebounds, while Durnin went for 21 points and six rebounds.
The following night proved less of a nail-biter, with the Magic going down to Willetton 103-84.
Stewart was phenomenal once again, scoring 21 second-half points to keep his team in the game as Willetton stormed back into the thick of things.
Mandurah led by four points at half time but fell apart afterwards, being outscored 40-63 in the final two periods to take the loss.
Damon Ballantyne returned for his first game of the season following a stint playing college ball in America, scoring four points, while Marving Smith went for 17 points, 12 rebounds.
Stewart ended his night with 34 points, eight assists and three rebounds.
It's the sixth time in the season's first nine games that Stewart has breached the 30-point mark. He sits second in the league among scoring averages, going at 28.3 points per night as well as six assists (fifth in the league).
Mandurah will be eager to bounce back when they travel to take on the top-two Geraldton Buccaneers on Saturday night.
