A prolific performance from Hamish Free saw the Mandurah Mustangs collect their first win over cross-town rivals South Mandurah since 2010 in a heated and physical encounter on Anzac Day.
The Mandurah ruckman was dominant across the four quarters, as were former Falcons Sam Evans and Brandon Penny, who received plenty of special treatment from their old teammates.
An all-in brawl spilled onto the sidelines after Penny got tangled up with Falcon Troy Lee on quarter time, but it was the red and white jumpers having the last laugh with a 6.8 (44) to 9.11 (65) win.
The Falcons put in an admirable performance, though, heading in as heavy underdogs after losing recruits Michael Humble and Bevan Bennell just two rounds into the season.
Callum Dews snared the first of the day to see the home side off to a hot start, and their defence stood tall across the four quarters despite a barrage of Mustangs forward entries.
The Falcons looked poise to make a run when they kept Mandurah goalless in the opening term despite them having the wind advantage, but Mustang Alex Cohen nailed the first of the second term to even the ledger.
The Brad Holmes show came into effect shortly after though, with the Falcons skipper booting three goals in the term to give his side some breathing space, including a ripper that saw him win the footy at ground level before finding his feet to kick truly under pressure.
But as they did in the second term, the Mustangs started hot in the third with Free dominating the ruck contest resulting in a goal key forward Alex McLeod.
Mandurah looked to be away when Jarryd Calver thought he'd slotted another, only to have it overturned on the goal line, the first of two instances for Calver in the third term.
Teammate Sam Evans had less trouble getting his majors on the scoreboard, as the second and third of his four-goal bag helped set up an 11-point buffer for the Mustangs at the final break.
Again Mandurah got away early in the fourth with Free unloading for a classy goal off one step before Evans put through his fourth to cap off a big second half.
Cohen, who put in a solid performance across the four quarters, would go on to ice the game with his second.
Jack Shanahan was outstanding for the Falcons and was named their best-on-ground in the post-game presentations by the umpires, while Free was an easy choice for Mandurah's most valuable player.
The win snaps a lengthy derby drought for the Mustangs, who now move to a 2-1 record, equaling their win tally from last season in just three games.
Meanwhile it's a third straight loss for the Falcons, who will be looking to take their form from the first half into a clash with Centrals next weekend.
The Mustangs will travel to play Baldivis as they search for a third straight victory.
