A new-look Mandurah Mustangs outfit will be eager to take a step forward this Peel Football and Netball League season, after securing the services of several talented young players ahead of the new campaign.
The likes of former Halls Head and South Mandurah young guns Reece Dillon and Brandon Penny have made the move to play for the red and white, while ex-Peel Thunder player Alex Cohen will bolster the side's midfield.
More PFNL:
Cohen predominantly played his footy with Peel Thunder's reserves last season, booting 16 goals from his 14 games with the side while also making three appearances at the league level.
While he's likely to see his share of midfield minutes in the PFNL, the 20-year-old could form a deadly forward line next to fellow recruit Alex McLeod, who joins the club from Kalgoorlie in the Goldfields Football League.
McLeod finished second in the GFL's leading goal-kicker award in 2018 nailing 42 majors from 16 games. He also kicked four second-half goals to lift the league to a division two win at the Landmark Country Football Championships.
Mustangs coach George Costello said the side's new additions would ease the load on mainstays Lachie Bray, Mitchell White, Jay Walton and Stuart Puls.
"Over the past few years it's probably been the same group of guys carrying a lot of the work, so we're excited to bring in some more talent that should help even the load,"
"We wanted to be young and fast so these guys all help in those aspects.
"They're all mates and they all wanted to play together so we're pretty happy to have them on board at the Mustangs."
Mandurah will be hoping the new acquisitions, as well as a clean slate on a new season, will see them back into contention for finals after years languishing at the depths of the ladder.
Costello said while it was hard to put a pass-mark on his side, simply bringing a more competitive brand of football would be a significant improvement.
"It's hard to know what to expect but if we can turn those blowout margins into some more admirable footy then we'll know we're moving forward," he said.
"Ideally I'd like to see us floating around the finals mark."
Mandurah's season kicks off with a clash against a Rockingham Rams outfit looking to stamp themselves as genuine flag contenders early in the season.
The two will meet at Anniversary Park on Saturday, April 6 at 4pm.
