Fishability is a Western Australian charity which provides regular recreational fishing opportunities for children and adults living with disabilities.
With a robust event and activities program, Fishability helps improve the health and well-being of members, through developing their self-confidence and social skills.
Fishability works with the community to promote fishing activities as a means of acceptance and inclusion with the provision of inclusive and disability programs.
Fishability in Mandurah commenced operations in 2012 and in a short time has grown exponentially.
Under the leadership and guidance of program coordinator Dee Castillo and her phenomenal team of volunteers, the Fishability jetty platform and vessel activities are delivered on a weekly basis at various locations throughout the Peel region at no cost to the participant.
Unfortunately, recent circumstances have left Fishability without a vessel to run their boat activities from.
The ever-popular boat excursion is always fully booked once a month and is well sought after by participants and support workers.
The two-hour monthly recreational fishing activity is now in jeopardy of cancellation unless the organisation can find a replacement vessel.
To keep up with the demand for the activities, Fishability is calling out to any members of the public who may be aware of a suitable vessel that will accommodate up to 16 passengers.
The boating activity transports children and adults living with disabilities, support workers, volunteers and crew up the many canals in Mandurah and out through the estuary for a spot of fishing and socialisation.
Fishability executive officer, Di Bruce said, "With a strong presence in the Mandurah area, the Fishability Mandurah boat program is an awesome opportunity for people in the community to connect with others, be part of a social network, experience recreational fishing in a safe and welcoming environment and enjoy the surroundings of our coastline."
"If a charter company or member of the public with a suitable vessel wants to put back into the community, we would love to hear from you."
"If you have a vessel or can refer a company, please contact me at executiveofficer@fishability.org.au"
