A group of some of the top quality Muay Thai fighters from around the country took to the ring for the ninth Futures fight night at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre on Saturday.
A handful of champions were crowned in what was the biggest of the Mandurah-based fight nights yet, with an 800-strong crowd packing into the centre to watch the card, which saw almost every bout come down to the wire in a scintillating display of martial arts.
WA local Alicia Pestana was outstanding on her way to a victory in the night's main event, taking down Miriam Sabot on points, while Victoria Sullivan was crowned WMC Australian champion following her powerful showing.
Mandurah's very own Dylan Thorpe was the highlight among the local fighters, winning his way to a new belt after taking out the Futures junior title with a victory over Drew Hedley.
The night also provided some underdog success with Stephen Kirk blasting his way to a win in the four-man eliminator series.
The eliminator sees four fighters whittled down to a final of the top two, with Kirk taking home the win despite having less than half the experience of his opponents.
The win saw Kirk throw his hand up for fighter of the night honours, but the Jessica Lindsay memorial trophy was awarded to Laine Fisher after he pulled off a stunning victory over Riley Anastas in a fiercely-fought bout.
Event director Chantel Green said the night produced the most evenly-contested card of any Futures show yet.
"Just about every fight it was hard to pick a winner," she said.
"All of them were just really high quality, entertaining fights that went down to the wire.
“To bring a show like that to Mandurah is something we’re really proud of so hopefully we can back it up with an even better event next time around.”
