The Peel Cavaliers will be led by a Peel Football and Netball League legend at the next Landmark Country Football Championships, with Rod Tregenza steering the ship as head coach.
Taking the reigns from two-time championship winning coach Clayton Falkingham, the ex-South Mandurah superstar will lead Peel's top side at the July carnival after accepting the role this week.
More PFNL:
Tregenza said he saw the role as a "good opportunity to get back into footy" after spending the previous three years cheering from the sidelines following his retirement from the game in 2015.
"It's really exciting for me," he said.
"I've spent some time away from footy these past few years and it's been enjoyable, but I was always keen to get back into it on some level at some stage.
"So when the call came through asking me to coach I thought 'why not?', it's a good chance to give back to the league that gave me so much during my playing days.
"There's a bit of Peel pride about it too."
Tregenza's legend is common knowledge for those involved in the PFNL.
Known for terrorising opposition full backs, the sharpshooting spearhead tallied more than 1800 goals (1000 of which came with South Mandurah) across his 326-game career.
His unstoppable best came in 2008 when he guided South Mandurah to a flag on the back of a whopping 238-goal season, breaking the West Australian record for goals in a single year.
All goal-scoring awards handed out in the PFNL are named in Tregenza's honour, and he was presented with "legend" status (one step above hall of fame honours) at a season launch function in 2018.
But it's the next generation of Peel footballers he will be concerning himself with now, with the newly-appointed coach signalling an influx of youth for this year's Cavaliers side.
"I'd like to get as many young kids in as possible," he said.
"The Landmark carnival is the best of the best in country footy, so I see it as a real opportunity to develop young Peel players and show them what it takes to compete at higher levels.
"I played in the carnival back in '98 and it's changed a lot since then, but from my experience the most important thing for a team to succeed there is just to get them to gel.
"Once they're all on the same page they'll play some good footy."
The Peel Football and Netball League season kicks off with four round one games to be held on Saturday, April 6.
