Youth performance company Riptide have announced they will introduce new classes in devising contemporary theatre for 12-15 year olds across the Peel region.
And the classes are already filling up quick with plenty of drama-loving youth around Mandurah keen to get involved.
The company has always held an ensemble of 15-25 year olds but have decided to open up the opportunity to younger teenagers following a collaboration between Riptide artistic director Katt Osborne and Mandurah Performing Arts Centre youth engagement officer Kellee Aberg.
Osborne said the company felt the timing was right to introduce the training classes.
“Riptide offers a very unique style of theatre where the ensemble basically build a show from scratch, no script, just us,” she said.
“It’s a really exciting and rewarding process.
“These new classes aim to offer that opportunity from a younger age, so they can have a stronger foundation in contemporary performance.”

Riptide will host an open day for interested youth to decide if the classes are suitable and meet the teachers, directors and fellow performers.
The open day will be held on January 30 from 4-5.30pm at MPAC.
Future tutor of the new classes, Teaghan Lowry said she was excited to delve even further into her love of contemporary performance.
“I think by teaching, I’ll get to further understand what I’ve been learning at Riptide for three years, as I’ll need to explain it to young people who may have never done contemporary performance before,” she said.
“I can’t wait to meet the students – it’s really exciting to have the opportunity to give someone else an avenue to channel their creativity.”
The classes will start on February 13 at MPAC and will run every Wednesday from 4-5:30pm.
Classes are filling fast but there are still a limited number of positions available. To register you or your child’s interest, email Riptide clea.purkis@manpac.com.au.
