Peel Aquatic Club star Rebekah Weller was in fine form once again in the seventh round of the WA Open Water Swim Series at the Harvey Dam earlier this month, taking out another win in the female open category.
But while the gun swimmer’s dominance furthered her lead atop the overall series ladder, it was her efforts helping out a young fellow Peel star that caught the eye and the admiration of spectators on the day.
Just before Weller entered the water to swim her own five kilometre race, she paired up with 10-year-old teammate Heidi Gstaettner to be part of yet another win on the day.
Heidi needed a chaperone during her 500m swim and couldn’t have asked for better assistance with Weller happy to put her hand up to help.
Heidi managed to finish first overall in her event while also winning the under 15 age group with Weller by her side.
“I felt great in the water, and knowing Bek was right beside me really boosted my confidence,” she said.
“She is an amazing swimmer, it was fantastic.”
Weller is now turning her focus to important upcoming events including the Australian National Championships in Adelaide this month and the Rottnest Channel Swim in seven weeks time.
Meanwhile Heidi returns to the pool where she is fighting for a state lead in her age group this summer season.
