Cyclists from around the state will hit the ground running in Mandurah when the city hosts the first round of the Ring Summer Criterium Cycling Series next month.
Now in its third year, the Ring is the pinnacle of summer racing in Western Australia, consisting of fully closed roads, roaring crowds and an electric event atmosphere.
The Ring celebrates the best of WA cycling with a high quality racing experience for new riders, all the way through to elite A-graders.
In 2019, the Ring aims to go to another level, with all five events in the series being raced on fully closed roads creating a European town-centre style of criterium.
Round one of the series will be held in Mandurah on Sunday, February 3 from 12pm to 6pm.
City of Mandurah deputy mayor Caroline Knight said it was an exciting time to be hosting the first round of the new series.
“Bringing events like this to Mandurah help support local businesses and boost our economy,” she said.
“This is also a great opportunity for competitors and visitors to experience and enjoy our beautiful city.”
WestCycle CEO Matt Fulton praised the City of Mandurah for their support in bringing the first round of the series to fruition.
“The course is truly spectacular and will provide a fantastic experience for riders and spectators along the sweeping Mandurah foreshore,” he said.
“Events like the Mandurah Super Criterium set a new standard for cycling events in Western Australia.”
Cycling events have proven to be financially beneficial to local business and tourism in the past.
The April 2017 Ring event in Leederville attracted over 5000 spectators, with local businesses reporting an increase of 13 per cent in trade on the day of the event.
