It’s 2019, so why don’t you start the year off right by getting your home ready for the New Year?
Our homes are so important. They are the place where we gather with our families, share our burdens, our successes, and it’s the stage where our lives play out.
The Christmas and New Year period is a wonderful opportunity to have a thorough clean up around the house and start off the New year with a fresh look.
Declutter as much as possible, the visual spaces and the hidden ones. Go through your wardrobes and drawers and bag the things that you didn’t wear in 2018. Go through your kid’s rooms and bag up the toys from the bottom of the toy box.
Look around you home and declutter the visual spaces so that you have a fresh look for a new year. Go out into the back yard and into your shed and load what isn’t necessary into your car.
Once you have bagged and packed everything in your car, bring whatever is still in good condition down to our Salvation Army Thrift Shop at 45 Lakes Road.
“We are so thankful, because without your donations we could not raise the money that we use to support our community,” shop manager Kerrie Miller said.
It’s important to remember that thrift stores are not garbage heaps, nor are they repair shops. Items that are obviously broken or unusable are not really helpful, and, in fact, donating this type of stuff will cause more work for our volunteers and actually cost us money to dispose of.

The main idea when giving to a thrift store is to treat the donations as if it’s being given to a friend or family member, someone who deserves respect.
Check items for damage before they are given – looking for broken zips, busted locks, rips or marks on the clothing.
“We don’t have a washing machine,” Ms Miller said. “So we’d appreciate it if the goods were in a good, clean, sellable condition.”
Donating to thrift shops is an amazing thing to do. It provides money for worthy causes. It provides people with repurposed goods at affordable prices. It keeps tons of garbage out of the landfill.
And, it helps you get rid of items that weigh you down and prepares your home for the New Year!
