Mandurah band The Gusset are looking to wrap 2018 up in a big way after launching their latest single, Disconnect, to a resounding response last month.
The local four-piece consisting of best mates Sam Case (drums), Jack Skelly (Vocals/rhythm guitar), Ryan O’loughlin (lead guitar) and Tom Dowding (bass) saw their latest work debut at number two on the Triple J Unearthed charts in late October, with the accompanying film clip dropping earlier this week.
Filmed on a Mandurah golf course by Codey Wilson, Case described the clip as a simple video of the larrikin indie rockers “having a laugh”, which goes hand-in-hand with their easy going approach to music.
“It was just a way for us to have some fun really,” the drummer said.
“The video’s nothing serious – I think we’re pretty chilled out when it comes to writing our music and we try to reflect that in our videos.”
The lads may have caught the ire of a few local golfers, but their new single has certainly attracted more positive vibes from music lovers.
Following on from their success with EP Sunsets and Phets back in March, Disconnect once again showcases The Gusset’s knack for blending indie and psych rock into a smooth-moving track.
But Case says the band took a different approach with their most recent work, taking more time to fine tune the single before a release.
“We were really proud of the EP and how we went about it, but it was done with a real at-home recording vibe and this time around we really wanted to knuckle down and produce some quality,” he said.
“We worked on this for way longer and came up with something we loved, so watching it release to such a positive response and getting the love back from everyone has been awesome.”
Next up for the group is a return to the stage, as they prepare for the official launch of Disconnect at Scarborough’s Indi Bar on Saturday, December 8.
The band’s last set of shows came after their EP launch in March, and Case said the group is “hanging out to play a gig.”
“It feels like ages since we played a show,” he said.
“It’s going to be great to play for all of our mates – we get so much support from everyone so this is a way we can pay it back.
“Last time round we packed out Jack Rabbit Slims in Perth and that was awesome, so we’re hanging out to get back on stage.”
The group has organised a bus to help their Mandurah following get to and from the gig, leaving the foreshore at 6.30pm.
