Ric Curwood conjured a dominant spell of bowling to buoy Mandurah to their seventh win from as many games as they dismantled the Halls Head batting order on Saturday afternoon.
Tasked with defending a total of just 139 runs, Curwood (4/14 off 10 overs) and his fellow Mandurah bowlers put in a magnificent effort to restrict Halls Head to a mere 78 in their chase before dismissing the outfit after 40 overs.
But the win also came on the back of a stellar knock from Matthew Jenkinson, who accounted for more than half of Mandurah’s runs after his side won the toss and elected to bat first.
Halls Head looked to have them on the ropes thanks to an outstanding spell with the ball from Chris Phelps, who struck with frequency on his way to the figures of 6/15.
Claiming the wickets of Reece Powell (2), Sach In (0) and Paul Okey (3) among his haul, Phelps’ efforts helped keep the pressure on Mandurah despite Jenkinson blasting his way to 72 runs.
Halls Head went into their chase with optimism needing just 140 to cause an upset, but last week’s hero Levi Muller going down for just four runs hurt their cause.
Lewis Binns did what he could with a 21-run contribution before he was dismissed leg-before-wicket from an In delivery, but Curwood managed to orchestrate a collapse after his fall that would see the home side come up short in their quest for a win.
Ian Lattimore was also effective with the ball, producing three maidens from his five overs to finish with 1/3.
The victory ensures Mandurah top spot on the ladder for at least another week, while Halls Head fall to seventh.
Pinjarra def. Shoalwater Bay
Jake Foley’s enormous day out saw Pinjarra back to the top four as they took down Shoalwater Bay in round seven.
The all-rounder was huge with both bat and ball, carving out 63 runs from 66 deliveries before going on to destroy the Seals’ order taking 4/8 with the ball.
His game-high 63 runs helped the Tigers tally 198 before Shoalwater had them all out in the 43rd over.
Dudley Cortland did his best to help the Seals in their chase with 42 runs but Foley’s bowling was enough to see Pinjarra back to winning form.
Hillman def. South Mandurah
Big games from Phil Green and Mitchell Hind saw Hillman record their first win of the 2018/19 season as they conquered South Mandurah on Saturday.
The Hornets duo both posted half centuries with Green (89) and Hind (59) both in fine touch as Hillman posted a hearty 263 runs after opting to bat first.
Matt Hill did his best to spur the Falcons on with 68 runs before he was caught out, but his side fell short as Mick McCurrach (3/29) and Hind (3/42) did enough with the ball to help lock down their side’s opening victory.
Both sides now share a 1-6 record with Warnbro.
White Knights Baldivis def. Waroona
The reigning premiers were handed a thrashing by the White Knights in round seven, with Baldivis bowling duo Stefan Botha and Greg Roos taking just 11.2 overs to destroy Waroona’s run chase.
Roos (32 runs) partnered with Cameron Reyne (34) to help Baldivis to 148 after choosing to bat first, but it was the damage they did with the ball that stunned last season’s champs.
Botha snared 4/19 from his six overs, while Roos exploded taking six wickets at the cost of a mere seven runs from 5.2 overs.
Their efforts saw the Warriors all out for just 26 runs in a shocking result.
Singleton def. Warnbro
A 110-run stand between Danny Woollard (46) and Tim Hutchison (56 not out) helped Singleton cruise past Warnbro on Saturday.
Opting to bat first did little to help the Swans as the Irwinians had them ousted on 114 thanks to some prolific bowling from Jay Boyd (3/10).
From there Singleton wasted little time accounting for the needed runs, with the opening duo doing the bulk of the heavy lifting before Nathan Anderson put the finishing touches on the chase after 31 overs.
The win is Singleton’s first since round two and snaps a three-game losing skid.
